What is the typical service life of a cylinder gasket?

2022-01-13

Cylinder head gasket, abbreviated as head gasket (commonly known as cylinder gasket), is an elastic sealing element placed between the cylinder block and the cylinder head. Since the surfaces between the cylinder block and the cylinder head cannot be perfectly flat, a cylinder head gasket is needed to prevent high-pressure gas, lubricating oil, and coolant from leaking out between them;

The service life of a cylinder gasket is generally about two years before it needs to be replaced:

1. The cylinder head gasket, abbreviated as cylinder gasket (commonly known as cylinder gasket), is an elastic sealing element placed between the cylinder block and the cylinder head. Since the cylinder block and cylinder head cannot be perfectly flat, a cylinder head gasket is needed to prevent high-pressure gas, lubricating oil, and cooling water from leaking between them;

2. There are two types of cylinder head gaskets: metal asbestos gaskets use asbestos as the base, wrapped with copper or steel sheets. Some use woven steel wire or perforated steel plates as the framework, and some add metal rings around the cylinder bore to improve strength. The advantage is lower cost, but the strength is relatively poor.

3. Metal gaskets are made from a single piece of polished steel plate, with elastic embossing at the sealing area. The sealing relies on the elasticity of the embossing and the heat-resistant sealing adhesive. They are widely used abroad. The advantages are high strength and good sealing effect, but the cost is higher.
